When I first started getting serious about Sports Marketing I took an internship with the Connie Mack World Series. I started off by working in the marketing department working on flyers for ticket buy backs as well as for the World Series Game. The World Series is actually only one week long however during the summer from Mid-May until the end of July Connie Mack Baseball is played in several states including Puerto Rico and they compete against each other in their hometowns to make it to the World Series. During this time the Professional Baseball scouts are keeping their ear to the ground to see which teams advance and which players they might want to look at. The World Series committee is also working on getting host families set up, getting local donations from different businesses, and getting activities set up for the boys and the coaches.
When the summer started I worked in the Marketing department at the Parks and Rec center until The World Series started. I would take pictures of the state softball tournament to put on the website, work on flyers for different events and I worked on a walking brochure for the walking parks. The walking parks brochure took me pretty much the entire summer since we had to go through measure the distance and the grade levels on each park. Farmington has around 10 parks that you could potentially go walking at. This brochure was designed to create a walking event every Saturday to get the community up and moving. The brochure was given out to all participants as well as put in all of the city buildings. The end of July I created a one page newspaper spread to kick off the Connie Mack World Series. During the World Series I was in charge of typing the game summaries for every game. This was not only emailed out to the teams’ hometown newspapers but also put on the Connie Mack World Series Website.
All of these marketing campaigns were by far the best and funniest event I had done in all of my schooling. This internship really helped me create a portfolio for my future as well as lead to more marketing opportunities. I don’t think that any other experience I have had during my school years has compared to this project. It was definitely an experience that I won’t forget as well as a great internship for my resume. After that year they kept me on the Connie Mack World Series Committee and for the next four years I would continue to do the game summaries.
