Mentoring is one of the best things that I have ever come across. I did not have to actually do any form of mentorship or internship in my undergrad for graduation completion. I chose to do an internship which eventually turned into a very long mentorship before I started my current one. I volunteered for the Connie Mack World Series from 2007 to 2012. I learned so much in the five years that I interned. The internship was more than an internship but more a mentorship. I worked with so many different people who showed me so many different aspects to Connie Mack and baseball. Had I opted out of doing the intership I never would have learned what I learned. I feel like it also prepared me for the mentorship that I am currently taking. An internship is not the same as a mentorship. A mentorship pairs you with people who actually teach you what its like in your field. An internship does not allow for that.
I think that everyone should have some sort of a mentorship, even several. Taking them only prepares you for the real world. It also helps open your eyes to different parts of an organization. You can learn and absorb so much and decide if that career path is right for you or if there is something else that you would rather be doing.
I also think that all colleges and universities should require that all students do a mentorship not an internship before you can graduate.
By doing a mentorship before you start your career you can see if this is what you want to do. This saves time that might otherwise have been wasted on a career that you realized you did not enjoy.
Having a mentor who is interested in mentoring is also a huge help. Having someone who doesn't care will not give you the full insight into your chosen career. A good mentor will help you decide if the career that you chose is a good one for you.
Once you have been in your chosen field you can become a mentor and help other students decide their future.
